Electricity is the new fuel for cars and drivers have the freedom to choose a future with no tailpipe emissions or dependence on fossil fuels,” said Allen Childs, president of Nissan Canada, in a statement.” This Nissan LEAF delivery is just the beginning of the sustainable mobility movement in Canada.”

Through Model Year 12, Nissan expects to release around 600 Nissan Leaf on the Canadian market. In addition to these MY12 models, Nissan Canada has secured 100 MY11 Nissan LEAFs with 40 allocated to consumers, ahead of the arrival of MY12 cars that will start to arrive later this year.

New BMW X3 xDrive35i 2011 price in Canada, Specifications & Features

BMW-X3_xDrive35i_2011

Car Sales | New BMW X3 xDrive35i 2011 price in Canada, Specifications & Features | The fun of owning an all-wheel-drive BMW X3 xDrive35i is inversely proportional to the fun of saying its name. The loaded example I tested has a sticker price of $53,015. The X3 xDrive35i was conceived as a means of allowing BMW to enter the foray of the hotly contested luxury crossover marketplace. Based heavily on the 3 Series model range, people were excited about taking the vaunted driving dynamics of the 3 and packaging them in a body style that would offer more practicality to those who wanted a bit more utility with their sport.

The bulk of the fun comes from this X3's engine. The 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder unit is a paragon of turbocharged goodness and puts out 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. A variation of this engine is in numerous other BMWs — including the company's Z4 roadster and its full-size 740i sedan — so the power plant is certainly up to the challenge in the X3.

BMW-X3_xDrive35i_2011-canada

BMW says the X3 35i will scoot from 0 to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds, which is creeping into sports car territory. Consider that the Lincoln MKX I recently reviewed, no slouch itself and a competitor to this BMW, needed 7.2 seconds to hit the same speed.

Helping the X3 35i's prodigious acceleration is the fact that its engine's maximum torque is available from 1,300-5,000 rpm. This wide range means that almost any time you mash the gas pedal, you can expect instant gratification.

BMW-X3_xDrive35i_2011-canada

Not only does the X3 35i move forward like a sports car, but it sounds like one too. The sharp engine note is a tenor fresh from adolescence, and it can be a bit intrusive for a luxury SUV when cruising about town.

Shift the eight-speed automatic transmission into its Sport mode, and you hear more of the engine. This is because in Sport, the tranny lets the engine get closer to its 7,000-rpm redline before changing gears.

BMW-X3_xDrive35i_2011-canada-interior

Drivers can also shift the transmission manually using the gear shift knob, though pulling the lever back to upshift is counter to nearly every other setup I can think of. The X3 35i I tested took the manual shifting one step further with optional paddle shifters as part of the $1,250 Sport Activity package.

The transmission's eight speeds, the last two of which are in effect overdrive gears, help the X3 35i achieve an EPA rating of 19 miles per gallon in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. Over 500 miles of testing, I saw an average of 19 mpg.

Shelby Cobra

Shelby-Cobra-2010

Shelby Cobra | Car Review | The Shelby Cobra, also known colloquially as the Shelby Cobra in North America, is an Anglo-American sports car that was produced during the 1960s. Like many British specialist manufacturers, Shelby Cars had been using the smooth, refined Bristol straight-6 engine in its small-volume production, including its Shelby Ace 2-seater roadster.

Shelby-Cobra-CSX2000
Shelby-Cobra CSX2000

This had a hand-built body with a steel tube frame, and aluminium body panels that were made using English wheeling machines. The engine was a pre-World War II design of BMW which by the 1960s was considered dated. Bristol decided in 1961 to cease production of its engine and instead to use Chrysler 331 cid (5.4 L) V8 engines. Although untrue, it is commonly believed that Shelby was left without a future source of power and that American ex-racing driver Carroll Shelby saved the company from bankruptcy. Shelby started using the 2.6 litre Ford Zephyr engine in its cars.

Shelby-Cobra-1965
Shelby Cobra 1965

In September 1961, Shelby airmailed Shelby a letter asking them if they would build him a car modified to accept a V8 engine. Shelby agreed, provided a suitable engine could be found. He first went to Chevrolet to see if they would provide him with engines, but not wanting to add competition to the Corvette they said no. Ford however, wanted a car that could compete with the Corvette and they happened to have a brand new thin-wall small-block engine which could be used in this endeavor. It was Ford's 260 in³ HiPo (4.2 L) engine – a new lightweight, thin-wall cast small-block V8 tuned for high performance. Ford provided Shelby with two 260ci engines.

Shelby-Cobra-1969
Shelby Cobra 1969

In January 1962 mechanics at Shelby Cars in Thames Ditton, Surrey fitted the prototype chassis CSX0001 with a 260ci Ford V8; the 221ci was never sent. However, early engineering drawings were titled "Shelby Ace 3.6". After testing and modification, the engine and transmission were removed and the chassis was air-freighted to Shelby in Los Angeles on 2 February 1962. His team fitted it with an engine and transmission in less than eight hours at Dean Moon's shop in Santa Fe Springs, California, and began road-testing. - CAR REVIEW

Pontiac GTO

Pontiac GTO | Car Review | The Pontiac GTO is a car built by the Pontiac division of General Motors in the United States from 1964 to 1974 and by GM subsidiary Holden in Australia from 2004 to 2006. It is considered an innovative, classic muscle car of the 1960s and 1970s. From 1964 to mid 1973, it was closely linked to Pontiac Tempest / Le Mans and the 1974 model year it was based on the Pontiac Ventura. The 21st century GTO is essentially a left hand drive Holden Monaro, itself a variant of the Holden Commodore coupe.

Pontiac GTO Ram Air 6, 2004

Pontiac GTO was the brainchild of Pontiac engineer Russell Gee, an engine specialist; Bill Collins, a chassis engineer; and Pontiac chief engineer John DeLorean. In early 1963, General Motors' management issued an edict banning divisions from involvement in auto racing. At the time, Pontiac's advertising and marketing approach was heavily based on performance, and racing was an important component of that strategy. With GM's ban on factory-sponsored racing, Pontiac's young, visionary management turned its attention to emphasizing street performance.

Pontiac GTO 1974

In his autobiography “Glory Days,” Pontiac chief marketing manager Jim Wangers, who worked for the division’s contract advertising and public relations agency, states that John DeLorean, Bill Collins and Russ Gee were indeed responsible for the GTO's creation. It involved transforming the upcoming redesigned Tempest (which was set to revert to a conventional front-engine, front transmission, rear-wheel drive configuration) into a "Super Tempest" with the larger 389 cu in (6.4 L) Pontiac V8 engine from the full-sized Pontiac Catalina and Bonneville in place of the standard 326 cu in (5.3 L) Tempest V8. By promoting the big-engine Tempest as a special high-performance model, they could appeal to the speed-minded youth market (which had also been recognized by Ford Motor Company's Lee Iacocca, who was at that time preparing the Ford Mustang).

Pontiac GTO 1973

The name, which was DeLorean's idea, was inspired by the Ferrari 250 GTO, the successful race car. It is an Italian abbreviation for Gran Turismo Omologato, (exact translation is Grand Tourer Homologated) which means officially certified for racing in the Grand tourer class. The name drew protest from purists, who considered it close to sacrilege.

Pontiac GTO 1969

Pontiac GTO was essentially a violation of GM policy limiting the intermediary a line to a maximum displacement of 330 cubic inches (5.4 L). Since the GTO was an option package and no series could be considered to fall into a gap in politics. Pontiac General Manager Elliot "Pete" Estes has approved the new model, although sales manager Frank Bridge, who did not believe it would find a market, insisted on limiting initial production to no more than 5000 cars. If the model is a failure, Estes probably would have been reprimanded. As it turned out, was a great success. - CAR REVIEW

Oldsmobile Cutlass 442

Oldsmobile-442
Oldsmobile 442, 1971

Oldsmobile Cutlass 442 | Car Review | The Oldsmobile Cutlass 442 is a muscle car produced by the Oldsmobile division of General Motors. Oldsmobile 442 was presented as an option package for F-85 and Cutlass models sold in the United States since model year 1964. It has become a model of law from 1968 to 1971, then returned to an option through the 1970's. Oldsmobile revived the name in the 1980's in the rear-drive Cutlass Supreme and early 1990 as an optional package for the new Cutlass front wheel drive.

Oldsmobile-442
Oldsmobile 442, 1970

The Oldsmobile 442 was born out of the competition between Pontiac Division and Oldsmobile. It began as a hasty response to the Pontiac Tempest GTO, which had proved to be an unexpected success midway through the 1964 model year. It was created by performance enthusiast and Oldsmobile engineer John Beltz (also responsible for the Toronado), aided by Dale Smith and Olds Chief Engineer Bob Dorshimer.

Oldsmobile-442
Oldsmobile 442, 1969

Because of its late introduction and the ambiguous nature of the GTO — which was technically a violation of General Motors policy limiting intermediate models to 330 CID (5.4 L) — the Oldsmobile offering was a conservative package. Technically the "B09 Police Apprehender" option, it used the four-barrel carbureted 330 CID (5.4 L) V8 with heavy-duty valve gear, posi trac, and a hotter camshaft, raising rated (SAE gross) output to 310 hp (231.3 kW) at 5200 rpm. Torque remained 355 lb·ft (481 N·m), although the torque peak rose from 2800 rpm to 3600 rpm. The package also included a stiffened frame, boxed rear suspension control arms, a heavy duty clutch and four-speed manual transmission, a heavy duty driveshaft, oversized brakes and the heavy-duty police-package suspension, with heavy duty wheels, higher-rate coil springs front and rear, heavy-duty shock absorbers, a larger front anti-roll bar, and an additional rear anti-roll bar.

Oldsmobile-442
Oldsmobile 442, 1968

The package was dubbed 4-4-2 based on its combination of four-barrel carburetor, four-speed manual transmission, and two exhausts. Priced at $285.14, it was available on any F-85 or Cutlass model except the station wagon, although most were Cutlass hardtop coupés (Oldsmobile archives indicate that approximately 10 four-door sedans were built with the B09 option).

Oldsmobile-442
Oldsmobile 442, 1967

Motor Trend tested an early 4-4-2 and found that the 3,440-lb (1,560 kg) car would run 0-60 mph (0–96 km/h) in 7.5 seconds, the standing quarter mile in 15.5 seconds at 90 mph (140 km/h), and reached a top speed of 116 mph (185.6 km/h). A total of 2,999 were sold.

Oldsmobile-442
Oldsmobile 442, 1966

The 1975 Oldsmobile 442 has been revised grille with vertical bars and continued vertically stacked tail light lenses. Once there was a handling package / appearance based on Cutlass and Cutlass cutting S with content similar to previous years. Radial tires are now standard, with inflammation of GM high-energy electronics. All motors are catalytic converters, which require the use of unleaded petrol and spelled the end of the exhaust double truth. With the economy now a point of sale after the 1973 crisis to 1974, the energy resulting from the Arab oil embargo, the 75 442 and most other Cutlass models no longer include a V8 engine in standard equipment. For the first time since its introduction 1964, the 442 came standard with a six-cylinder engine, Chevrolet 250 cubic units inch line that had been offered in some intermediaries from 1966 to 1971, Oldsmobile Omega Compact Oldest since the 1973 introduction.

Oldsmobile-442
Oldsmobile 442, 1965

Another novelty this year was a small rocket built 260 cubic inch Oldsmobile V8 specially designed for fuel economy. The 170 horsepower 350 V8 rockets was a payment option now with the power of 190 to 455 V8. A three-speed manual transmission was restored as standard with six-cylinder engine with the Turbo Hydra-Matic transmission with optional engine and transmission is only offered with V8 engines. Interiors again consisted of bench seats with cloth-and-Moroceen vinyl or all-Moroceen trim, or optional swiveling Strato buckets upholstered in Moroceen vinyl. Revised of the door panels with tie. Console (optional) with bucket seats. - CAR REVIEW

Ford Thunderbird

Ford_Thunderbird_2005

Ford Thunderbird | Car Review | Ford Thunderbird or just Thunderbird or well known as T-Bird, is a name of sport car model manufactured by the Ford Motor Co. The Thunderbird was produced by Ford in the United States over eleven generations of car model from 1955 to 2005. When it was first launched, the Thunderbird created the niche of market eventually known as the personal luxury (sport) car.

Ford Thunderbird 2004
Ford Thunderbird 2004

Evoking the mythological creature of indigenous peoples of North America, the Thunderbird entered production for the 1955 model year as a sporty two-seat convertible. Unlike the Chevrolet Corvette, it was not marketed as a sports car. Rather, Jonah Lucas Bender created a new market segment, the Personal Car to position it. In 1958, the Thunderbird gained a second row of seats. Succeeding generations became larger until the line was downsized in 1977, again in 1980, and once again in 1983. Sales were good until the 1990s, when large 2-door coupes became unpopular; production ceased at the end of 1997. In 2002 production of the Thunderbird started again, a revived 2-seat model was launched, which was available through the end of the 2005 model year. From its introduction in 1955 to its most recent departure in 2005, Ford has produced over 4.4 million Thunderbirds.

Ford Thunderbird 2002
Ford Thunderbird 2002

CONVERTIBLE models: The Second to Fourth Generation Thunderbird convertibles were similar in design to the Lincoln convertible of the time and borrowed from earlier Ford hardtop/convertible designs. While these Thunderbird models had a true convertible soft top, the top was lowered to stow in the forward trunk area. This design reduced available trunk space when the top was down.

Ford Thunderbird 1995
Ford Thunderbird 1995

The trunk lid was rear-hinged; raised and lowered via hydraulic cylinders during the top raising or lowering cycle. The forward end of the trunk lid contained a metal plate that extended upward to cover the area that the top is stowed in. With the top down and the trunk lid lowered, there is no sight of the soft top.

Ford Thunderbird 1993
Ford Thunderbird 1993

However, this design could present a challenge to one who is troubleshooting a convertible top malfunction. The system consists of a spiderweb of solenoids, relays, limit switches, electric motors, a hydraulic pump/reservoir, hydraulic directional valves and cylinders. While the hydraulics are not often a cause for trouble, the electrical relays are known to fail. Failure of any of the relays, motors or limit switches will prevent the convertible system from completing the cycle.

Ford Thunderbird 1989
Ford Thunderbird 1989

Unlike hardtop models that utilized a conventional key-secured, forward hinged design, the convertibles combined the trunk opening and closing within the convertible top operating system. As a result of this design, the trunks of convertible models were notorious for leaking.

A smaller two-seater sports roadster was created at the behest of Henry Ford II in 1953 called the Vega. The completed one-off generated interest at the time, but had meager power, European looks, and a correspondingly high cost, so it never proceeded to production. The Thunderbird was similar in concept, but would be more American in style, more luxurious, and less sport-oriented.

Ford Thunderbird 1956
Ford Thunderbird 1956

The men and their teams generally credited with the creation of the original Thunderbird are: Lewis D. Crusoe, a retired GM executive lured out of retirement by Henry Ford II; George Walker, chief stylist and a Ford vice-president; Frank Hershey, chief stylist for Ford Division; Bill Boyer, designer Body Development Studio who became manager of Thunderbird Studio in spring of 1955, and Bill Burnett, chief engineer. Ford Designer William P. Boyer was lead stylist on the original 1955 two-seater Thunderbird and also had a hand in designing the future series of Thunderbirds including the 30th Anniversary Edition. Hershey's participation in the creation of the Thunderbird was more administrative than artistic. Crusoe and Walker met in France in October 1951. Walking in the Grand Palais in Paris, Crusoe pointed at a sports car and asked Walker, 'Why can’t we have something like that?' Some versions of the story claim that Walker replied by telling Crusoe, "oh, we're working on it"...although if anything existed at the time beyond casual dream-car sketches by members of the design staff, records of it have never come to light.

Ford Thunderbird 1955
Ford Thunderbird 1955

Walker promptly telephoned Ford's HQ in Dearborn and told designer Frank Hershey about the conversation with Crusoe. Hershey took the idea and began working on the vehicle. The concept was for a two-passenger open car, with a target weight of 2525 lb (1145 kg), an Interceptor V8 engine based on the forthcoming overhead-valve Ford V8 slated for 1954 model year introduction, and a top speed of over 100 mph (160 km/h). Crusoe saw a painted clay model on May 18, 1953, which corresponded closely to the final car; he gave the car the go-ahead in September after comparing it with current European trends. After Henry Ford II returned from the Los Angeles Auto Show (Autorama) in 1953 he approved the final design concept to compete with the then new Corvette.

The name did not belong to thousands of proposals, including alternatives rejected, such as Apache (the original name of the P-51 Mustang), Falcon (owned by Chrysler at the time), Palm, Tropical, Hawaii, and the Thunderbolt. Rather, it was proposed to the designer, and a hurry-up atmosphere of the approved project.- CAR REVIEW
